Articulate is a typographic reflection on reduction. Primarily it addresses the process of simplification – similar to the transition from Berthold’s »Akzidenz Grotesk« to »AG Buch« – transferring the typeface from a metal type environment into the diatype dimension (under G.G. Lange) and consequently simplifying it for the device and its mechanics. I explored several printed samples of »AG Buch« for being used in the »Diatronic« machine, digitized them and removed one layer of design, so to speak, by reducing the forms to their digital essence.
At the same time, it was my explicit ambition to ensure micro details are not lost and the design does not become too ironed out. The tiny imperfections and proportions of the AG Original (its roughness?) still remains in Articulate to keep a lively analogue vibe with digital precision.
