Furnir is a sans serif typeface derived from a lettering originally drawn by the architect Juhani Pallasmaa and his assistant Juha Ilonen in 1984. It appears as a title on the cover of »alvar aalto furniture« – a book published by the Museum of Finnish Architecture. The typeface takes two different approaches:
On the one hand, Furnir follows the logic of complex drawn shapes as seen in lowercase a. On the other hand, stylistic alternates are provided in order to account for the logic of constructed letters like n and t. The original handmade lettering references the curvature of Alvar Aalto’s furniture – Furnir keeps these moments and bends like wood.
